Malvern, PA - 20 August 2024 - Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) announced the launch of its latest silicon PIN photodiode, the VEMD8082.This new product is designed for biomedical applications, particularly in the areas of heart rate and oximetry monitoring, and is intended to provide higher sensitivity and better performance.
Key Features
Larger sensing area: The VEMD8082 has a radiosensitive area of 6.0 mm², which is a significant increase compared to its predecessor.
Increased reverse photocurrent: The photodiode's reverse photocurrent has been increased by 18% to 20% (depending on the wavelength), which allows for greater detection in the visible and near-infrared wavelength bands.
Compact size: The device measures only 4.8 mm x 2.5 mm x 0.5 mm, making it suitable for integration into thin and light devices such as smartwatches.
Reduced capacitance and faster response time: The diode capacitance has been reduced from 50 pF to 46 pF, and the rise time has been shortened to 40 ns, thus supporting higher sampling rates and improving the efficiency of data acquisition.
Application Areas
The high sensitivity of the VEMD8082 makes it particularly suitable for use in photoelectric volumetric pulse wave (PPG) technology, which detects changes in blood volume and flow by measuring the amount of light absorbed or reflected by blood vessels. Such precise measurements are essential for the diagnosis and monitoring of cardiovascular disease.
The VEMD8082 is now in volume production and available for sampling, marking further innovation and development in Vishay's biosensor space. As technology continues to advance, the VEMD8082 is expected to play an increasingly important role in medical monitoring devices, driving innovation and adoption of wearable devices.
