NXP Semiconductors announced on 12 November 2024 the i.MX 94 series of application processors, the latest addition to the company's i.MX 9 series. This family of processors is designed for applications such as industrial control, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), telematics, industrial and automotive gateways, and building and energy control.
Core Features
The i.MX 94 series processors offer the following outstanding features:
1. integrated 2.5 Gbps Ethernet time-sensitive network (TSN) switch
2. Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) support
3. Built-in eIQ Neutron Neural Network Processing Unit (NPU)
Powerful Multi-Core Architecture
The new series features a 64-bit multi-core design, including:
Up to 4 Arm Cortex-A55 cores (can run Linux)
2 Cortex-M33 cores
2 Cortex-M7 cores
This architecture provides enhanced real-time processing capabilities and supports a wide range of industrial protocols.
Security and Functional Safety
The i.MX 94 series excels in security:
Integrated EdgeLock secure enclave (advanced configuration)
Support for secure boot, secure debug and secure updates based on post-quantum cryptography
Runtime protection features such as automatic recovery to a trusted state
Network Protocol Support
The processor supports a wide range of industrial network protocols, including:
Traditional serial fieldbus protocols (e.g. Profibus, Modbus)
Ethernet-based real-time network protocols (e.g. Profinet, EtherCAT)
TSN implementations of these protocols
Industry Implications
Charles Dachs, senior vice president and general manager of Industrial and IoT at NXP, said, ‘The i.MX 94 family provides high-performance edge processing for today's industrial automation and automotive telematics applications, along with advanced networking, security, safety and AI features that pave the way for future innovation.’ Designed to simplify complex connectivity environments, this new processor provides critical support for industrial automation and software-defined vehicles.
