In an era where electric vehicles (EVs) are rapidly gaining popularity and charging infrastructure is becoming a major focus for manufacturers, Microchip Technology recently introduced three new electric vehicle charger reference designs, designed to accelerate time-to-market for charging solutions by simplifying the integration process. These designs not only demonstrate the cutting edge of technology, but also demonstrate Microchip's commitment to advancing sustainable mobility.
Revolutionary designs for home charging
The first reference design is a single-phase AC home charger designed for home users. It provides an affordable and convenient charging solution for single-phase power environments. The highlight of the design is its high-performance energy metering, equipped with automatic calibration technology, which greatly simplifies the production process. In addition, it is equipped with safety features such as protective earth neutral (PEN) fault detection and residual current device (RCD) detection to ensure user safety during use.
Intelligent solutions for commercial charging
For high-end residential and commercial charging stations, Microchip introduced a three-phase AC commercial charger reference design that integrates the Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) 1.6 stack and a Wi-Fi system-on-chip (SoC). This design not only supports remote management, but also provides intelligent network communication capabilities for charging stations, making them more efficient and flexible to operate.
Enhanced User Experience for Public Charging
The third design is designed for commercial and public charging stations and supports bi-directional charging up to 22 kW. It features a graphical user interface (GUI) with a thin-film transistor (TFT) screen and touch inputs for an enhanced user interaction experience. The design has undergone an architectural review in accordance with UL 2231 standards to ensure its reliability and stability in public environments.
A New Level of Integration and Interoperability
These reference designs not only provide complete hardware design documentation and source code, but also come with a tested software stack that is compliant with multiple communication protocols, including OCPP. This means that Microchip's solutions enable seamless interoperability with the central system, regardless of the charging point's network or vendor. These innovative designs from Microchip Technology provide strong support for the development of EV charging infrastructure. By providing flexible, scalable solutions, Microchip is helping manufacturers quickly respond to market demands and drive further growth in the electric vehicle industry.
